Experience

Background/Interest in tutoring: As an experienced tutor, I expect my tutees to prepare before each session (working on practice problems, pinpointing issues/confusion) to address any issues they’ve encountered with material. During sessions I reteach material using the most basic BUT FUNDAMENTAL explanations, I work through practice problems and add new problems to ensure the student understands the topic/concept at hand. I also provide study skills/methods that could help a student best retain various material for their course. I am not just a tutor, I’m also a mentor helping guide each student I encounter to be a better version of themselves. Essentially, I love learning and I believe that learning should be a fun experience! Thus I bring my energy and enthusiasm to every session along with my foundational knowledge in the sciences, it's a perfect match! Current Qualifications: Professional & Chemistry Biology Tutor for Mount Mary University (> a year) Biochemistry Qualifications: In my experience teaching Biology at Marquette, students will memorize a slide/information before they try and understand it due to the type of learning they are already accustomed to. In my Biochemistry (all of them honestly) sessions, once a student has identified problem areas in the topic, I have them first try and define what it is. If they can't define it, tell its' purpose, where it's involved, how it will react when modified and why does it behave the way it does, then that means they haven't learned the topic/concept. In collegiate science courses, professors don't care if you can memorize, they care if you're able to tell them what happens under changing conditions and why. Essentially this is the separation between a person who purely memorizes and one that goes the extra extent to understand. My ability to meet my tutee where they need help the most, give them fundamental understanding of concepts and prepare them to tackle new problems and information is what makes me an awesome Biochemistry Tutor, and an excellent tutor period. It's rare to find tutors that go beyond the basic definition, or "its this way because it is" explanations, I take pride and full responsibility in being an avid learner willing to share my knowledge with any inquiring mind. Biology Qualifications: When I graduated Marquette, I was first employed as Biology Seminar Leader, which is essentially the same thing as a Teaching Assistant. Thorough this I assisted entering Marquette University freshmen develop college level study skills within the context of Biology-1009. I observed the university class, conducted an academic seminar daily around subject area, held office hours, and lead occasional small group tutorials. I provided a detailed breakdown of the concepts focused on in lecture, as well as provided the students with study sheets that were used for quiz and exam preparation. The students learned to work in study groups as well as learned various organization skills. This experience paired with my current role as a Professional Chemistry and Biology Tutor, makes me an awesome Biology tutor. Chemistry Qualifications: I have been tutoring General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry for at least 6 years now, therefore, I have a lot of experience with the varying types of problems that exist for it. I currently work as a Professional Chemistry & Biology tutor for Mount Mary university and through this position, I encounter a large amount of students that are coming from different disciplines within the Sciences, therefore I am always prepared and ready to teach ANY subject/concept at ANY given time.
