Private tutor in Milwaukee, WI

Education

MA and PhD in English from the University of Iowa; My BA was in Psychology and English (with Honors). I currently teach composition at Montana State University Billings.

Experience

I have eight years of experience teaching literature and composition courses, at two universities and a community college. I currently teach writing courses at MSU Billings. I believe that reading and writing well are two of the most important skills for success in college and the workplace; I also believe that the analytical and critical thinking skills that writing helps to develop are crucial for becoming an informed citizen and a well-rounded person. I value education very highly, and I love being a tutor, because I find it very rewarding to help people live up to their potential! I also have two years of experience tutoring English, Psychology, and Math for students with learning disabilities. I have taught students from diverse backgrounds, with a wide variety of levels of preparedness. I think that this experience makes me especially effective as a tutor, not only because I am able to use a range of different teaching methods, but also because I understand why your instructor is teaching you the information and skills that they are. Being able to explain the importance of the skills, how they build on one another, and how they are best applied, makes the tutoring process easier and more effective.

Hobbies

When I'm not reading or teaching, I'm usually outdoors. I love hiking, camping, and rock climbing. I also enjoy learning about the wildlife and geology of the areas that I explore. Music is a very important part of my life; I enjoy listening to many kinds of music, and I am currently (slowly) teaching myself how to play the banjo. In general, I am inquisitive and enjoy learning as much as I can about the world around me. I also find it important to give back. In the past, I have volunteered at an assisted living facility, helping senior citizens learn how to use a computer to send email to their family, and at a food pantry.
