Education

2012 Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing with Distinction, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico 1992 Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking with High Distinction, California College of Arts & Crafts, Oakland, California

Experience

As an art instructor, I have over 6 years of experience. I have taught at the university level as well as some courses to community groups. As I'm the father of a creative 6 year old daughter, I have a growing interest in teaching art concepts to younger people. The subjects I am most fluent in teaching are Life Drawing / Objective drawing techniques, Structural drawing techniques, Figure / portrait drawing, rapid visualization, commercial illustration, and cartooning. My lessons also focus on basic visual literacy skills, vocabulary, and art history appreciation. My teaching philosophy is that drawing is a practice and physical skill that improves with repeated activity, and that it should be fun, even when things aren't working out on the paper. The materials I use in the lesson setting are mostly charcoal, some graphite, and lots of newsprint paper. My passion for teaching these subjects has been fostered in part by my education- in particular my graduate studies at the University of New Mexico, where i worked with the art historians Dave Hickey and Libby Lumpkin. During my time there I also took a number of courses in the anthropology department. I have an active exhibition and publication record as a professional artist. I've exhibited my work in the US and internationally for over two decades. I also do commercial art projects for clients in the fashion, entertainment and food industry. CV on request.

Hobbies

As a lifelong learner, I'm a member of Milwaukee Maker's space, where I've recently been learning to make 3-D stuff and use tools I know nothing about. I"m also a huge music fan, I've been playing guitar since I was 5 years old. I like to read and collect books. My favorite things to do are: hang out with my family, cook good food, and spend time in my studio.
