Experience

First, I’d like to share a personal story: My family is Mexican and my siblings and I all grew up speaking Spanish in our home. My family lived upstairs from my grandmother and grandfather for most of my life, and since my grandmother only spoke Spanish, it was very important that I learn Spanish. My grandmother and I had a very close relationship which I am eternally grateful for. Aside from myself and my three siblings, none of the other grandchildren had that opportunity to build this relationship because they did not learn Spanish. My grandmother always teased that we were her only REAL grandchildren because of this. This is why I believe in the power of bilingualism, and am excited to help others develop their Spanish language skills. Now, onto the professional: I excelled in my Spanish for Spanish Speakers and AP Spanish classes in high school, and continued to study Spanish Literature for two years in college. Live interpretation has been part of both of the jobs that I have had for the past 5 years. Currently, I am a paralegal in an immigration law office, where I translate legal processes on a daily basis to clients. I am also experienced in translating documents, such as birth and marriage certificates. I have previously tutored elementary and middle school students at a local bilingual K-8 school in Milwaukee while in college. Most students were still developing their English language skills and required extra support in all subjects due to this. At the high school level I have extensive experience with mentoring and working with students in this age range in leadership skill development. For 4 years I worked as a Youth Organizer, training, facilitating meetings, retreats, and workshops, and helping students also develop the skills to do the same. I am currently studying Curriculum and Instruction at UW-Milwaukee, and getting my teaching licensure, and am therefore in the process of studying and practicing important teaching techniques.

Hobbies

My favorite hobby, although I do not get to do it as often as I'd like, is travel. My ultimate goal is to visit every country in Latinoamerica. I enjoy exercising every morning, hiking in the summer, eating at new restaurants, being active in my community, and spending time with family and friends. Previously, I was a dancer in a Mexican Folkloric and Aztec dance troupe. This was a major part of my life for many years, and although I no longer participate, it definitely molded my love and passion for cultural preservation.
