Experience
I've taught college composition and literature courses for four years, working in that time with students from a wide array of backgrounds, from high-school students in inner-city Milwaukee to non-traditional nursing students in rural East Tennessee, to "traditional" collage freshmen at two major universities. I have two years experience as a tutor in university writing centers as well. On top of this, I spent the summer of 2010 as a volunteer tutor teaching English as a second language to immigrants displaced by the Iraq war. I want to be a tutor because I love language, writing, communication and literature-- it is, after all, what I've devoted my life to-- but I haven't always had that passion. In elementary school and high school, I failed miserably at writing, and I hated English for that. However, some exceptionally persistent teachers in college decided that, regardless of what I thought about writing, I had a gift for it. So they took the time to show me how amazing it could be, and how I could be a successful collage writer. I owe everything I've accomplished to those teachers that first took the time to help me, and I'd love to do the same for young students who are struggling to learn how to express themselves in written English.
