ExperienceI am a fourteen year veteran of the entertainment industry with a focus in lighting design and technology for theatre. I hold a Master's of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Lighting Design from Illinois State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre with a minor in Studio Art from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA. Cornell is structured on a One Course At A Time schedule, which allows students to give their undivided attention to a single course for the entire month-long term. The OCAAT system offered me a chance to focus my energy in a way I had not experienced previously, and I strive to bring that to my students as well. In our society, one often hears about the value of "multitasking," but I firmly believe that there is no such thing. We can do many things in a short period of time, the trick is giving one's undivided attention to the task at hand for the amount of time available, however brief that time may be.
As an instructor, I have taught in both lecture hall and one-on-one settings, with ages ranging from upper elementary school to undergraduates. Regardless of the subject matter being taught and the age of my students, I place a heavy emphasis on written and oral communication skills, vocabulary building, and critical thinking. My goal in any educational situation is the point of applied knowledge - for my students to not only be able to parrot back what they have memorized, but for them to apply the concepts and knowledge they have gained to situations other than those specifically addressed in our lessons. I also place a strong emphasis on time management and the ability to independently develop a schedule for long term projects.
As a professional, I have worked with such diverse companies as Illinois Shakespeare Festival, First Stage Children's Theatre, Portland Center Stage, and the Muhlenberg College Summer Music Theatre Festival.
HobbiesOutside of my professional life, my major interests are reading, hiking, gardening, cooking, fire dancing (also called poi), and spending time with my two year old daughter. I speak some French and read music passably well, though I am no longer a regularly practicing musician.
